Darlington County School District Announces Leadership Changes for the 2025–26 School Year

July 11, 2025

The Darlington County School District (DCSD) this week announced several leadership updates for the 2025–2026 school year.
Carla Jefferson will serve as the district’s new Director of Intervention and Innovative Programs. In this role, she will oversee both the Darlington County Intervention School, which offers an in-person alternative setting for students needing additional support, and DCSD Digital-360, the district’s fully virtual education program. Her focus will be on ensuring that every student has access to the resources and support needed to succeed, regardless of their learning style or circumstances. Jefferson is a veteran educator who most recently served as the district’s Director of Digital Learning. Her previous roles include principal of the Darlington County Virtual Academy, instructional technology coordinator, and classroom teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Teaching from Claflin University and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration from Winthrop University. Jefferson is an Apple Distinguished Educator; a Google Certified Educator, Trainer, and Innovator; a treasurer of the ISTE+ASCD Board, and a member of the SCAET Board of Directors.
Dr. Meredith Taylor returns to DCSD as the Elementary Math and Science Coordinator. In this role, she will lead efforts to strengthen math and science instruction in elementary classrooms across the district. Taylor brings decades of experience to the position, having served as a classroom teacher, school counselor, principal, and district curriculum administrator. Taylor is currently adjunct professor at Coker University and executive director of Taylor Made Education Solutions. Taylor has spent the last five years as a professional learning specialist for Curriculum Associates. Taylor earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Johnson C. Smith University, her Master of Education in Counselor Education from South Carolina State University, and both her Education Specialist and Doctor of Education degrees in Educational Administration from South Carolina State University.
Melinda Brown will serve as the district’s first Coordinator of Bullying Prevention and Attendance Support, a newly created role that underscores DCSD’s commitment to addressing two major issues that impact student achievement: chronic absenteeism and bullying. Brown will work closely with schools, families, and community partners to create strategies that improve student attendance and ensure safe, supportive learning environments for all. She most recently served as the Principal of the Darlington County Intervention School. Brown has also served as associate principal, curriculum coordinator, master teacher, mentor teacher, and a classroom teacher. Brown holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Coker University, a Master of Science in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessments, and an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Walden University.
“These leadership appointments reflect our continued commitment to meeting students where they are and ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed,” said Dr. Matthew Ferguson, superintendent of Darlington County School District. “Each of these educators brings not only deep experience but also a passion for innovation, excellence, and student-centered work. I’m especially proud that they all have roots in Darlington County. It speaks to the strength of our homegrown talent and the power of investing in people who understand and believe in our students.”
